The Microwave and Optics Applications research group of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens deals with applied electromagnetism, with emphasis on microwave and optical frequencies. It was founded in 1999 and since then has been actively involved in the study, analysis and design of devices with emphasis mainly on microwave frequencies. For this purpose, it has developed several numerical codes, while it has a number of commercial simulation packages.
Since its establishment, the group has participated in the Hellenic Fusion Program (formerly the National Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion Program, EPETHS), and is funded by major competitive European research programmes. It is mainly active in the study and design of gyrotrons and other microwave devices, while it has developed collaborations with major research centers in Europe. Through this activity, the group has achieved a high degree of international recognition as one of the most experienced research groups in Europe for the analysis and design of gyrotron components, such as the cavity and the beam channel.
The team is staffed by experienced faculty and staff members of the Departments of Physics and Aerospace Science & Technology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, renowned postdoctoral researchers, as well as doctoral candidates, while undergraduate and graduate students also participate in it in the context of the preparation of their Bachelor’s and Master’s theses.
